Macbook Pro - No Audio through headphones - Yosemite

I had a set of noise cancelling headphones but the pin kinda got broken. So I connected another audio pin to it. Now the problem is that I think the pin is slightly longer than normal. It works with most other devices like my PC and my phone etc. But when I plug it into my Macbook pro (Mid 2014, 15 inch) it triggers the "optical digital out" option which I can't select and has no volume controls. So I don't get any sound through my headphones. Also, when I take out the headphones I get no sound through the inbuilt speakers until I close the lid and open it again. I can't seem to find the solution anywhere. Please help me.

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014), OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)
