reformat iMac with external & ICloud

Hi I would like to reformat my iMac. Not sure how to back this up. I have all passwords in keychains, but if I open my time machine external drive and type in key chains it does not find it. Do I back up keychains to iCloud? If so how do I back it up and then how do I download back from ICloud to my computer.

thanks

iMac (27-inch Mid 2011), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

You backup using Time Machine and/or you can create a bootable clone. Both methods require an external HD(s).

Why do you wan tot reformat, in most cases this is a total waste of time. If your computer is not working perfectly it is best to troubleshoot the problem. I would recommend downloading EtreCheck and posting the report in your reply. Then we can look for obvious issues and get you on the right road.

OS X is not like MS Windows that requires doing and erase and install at the first hint of a problem.

I do have a external, my computer is not responding to well. I get the spinning ball a lot. the other day try to shut down computer and safari would not let it, i tried to close safari and could not. The only way I could shut down was hold button. Its running very slow. Is EtreCheck easy to use, I am not very good on the computer?

I think your problem is simple to solve, your computer is starved for RAM. Your computer can accommodate up to 32GB of RAM, you still only have the original 3GB which was fine when you were running Snow Leopard however Yosemite needs more. I would recommend purchasing RAM from either Crucial or OWC (www.macsales.com), if you added 2 ea. 4GB DIMMS that would take it to 12 GB and that should help considerably.

Also very any third party apps are up-to-date too.

Notice all the killed processes due to memory pressure? This is a clear indication that your computer needs more RAM. I've head some complaints about the FitBit software but I also know of people who are using it on their Macs without any problems. I've seen no consistent pattern although since I'm not conversant about Fitbit it could be the issue is with different models with varying features.
