How do I continue using iPhoto without installing upgrade?

I was in the middle of working with my photos when iPhoto quit unexpectedly. When I relaunched the program it said to either upgrade or quit. It said that its previous versions of iPhoto will not be readable after the upgrade.

MacBook Pro (17-inch Early 2009), OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)

What version of iPhoto are you currently using? If it worked before the crash then it'll still work. It could be the library that's damaged. As a test launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library. Can you? Import some photos and test to see if the same problem persists. Does it?

If the test library works OK the your primary library was damaged in the crash. In that case apply the two fixes below in order as needed:

Fix #1

1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.

2 - apply Option #4 to rebuild the database.

Fix #2

Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library

1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.

2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..

3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.

4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.

5 - Click on the Create button.

Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

WHEN I TRY TO LAUNCH IPHOTO I RECEIVE THIS MESSAGE:

In order to open “iPhoto”, you need to update to the latest version.

The version of iPhoto installed on this Mac is not compatible with OS X Yosemite. Download the latest version for free from the Mac App Store.

THEN I SEARCH APP STORE AND RECEIVE THIS MESSAGE:

The item you've requested is not currently available in the U.S. store.

I have done this before which is why I was messing around with my photos. When all my photos were rebuilt in the last crash, it created quadruplicates of each picture along with a picture of each person's face in each photograph. I was going through the process of deleting all the duplicates and erroneous face pictures, trying to save my 2,000 photos frok the 30,000 that it created. Once I had saved them all to an album I was eventually going to take them all out of iPhoto. But if I have to do this all over again it'll take me another couple of months.

A rebuild did not cause that - that was caused by user error importing an old iphoto library - NEVER import an iPhoto library - as you see it does not work and creates a massive mess

Restore your library from before you did this import and if it needs rebuilding launch iPhoto while holding down the option and command keys and repair permissions and then rebuild the database

Your best option is to restore your iPhoto library from the latest backup made just prior to that crash. Then open and run again.

Otherwise, if you make a backup of your current library and do those fixes you can always go back to the backup if the fixes are an improvement.

I hope you didn't try any file deletion from the library using the Finder. That's a sure way to damage a library leaving Fix #2 above as the only option.

You're problem is entirely different from the OPs so don't hijack the thread. Start your own topic.

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a solution. We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:

  • what system are you running?
  • are you runnning iPhoto or Photos?
  • if iPhoto what version are you using?
  • what do you see in the iPhoto window when you connect your camera or memory card?
  • what fixes have you tried?
  • where is your library located?
  • did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring?
  • are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?
  • what type of Mac?
  • how much free space on your boot drive?

Then you don't have a backup copy of the library because Time Machine can't backup itself. The only copy of that large library is the one that you're having trouble opening, Try copying the library from TM drive to your boot drive and try to open it there or to another external HD that is formatted OS X Extended (journaled).
