buffering problems with on-line videos

Can anyone suggest what I can do. For a while now I've been unable to watch any YouTube or on-line video (news articles etc) due to excessive buffering - every few seconds. I currently have OS X version 10.9.5 so not sure what the problem is. Would appreciate some ideas. Thank you!
