what is lmi1?

I paid for a MacKeeper Cleverbridge software and got an activation code. A box appeared on my screen saying I should call a number for technical support to install it. I called the number and the man who answered said "yes you need my help to uninstall the old version and install the new version. Go to www.lmi1" I attempted to do that and a company having something to do with wood products came up. Then somehow I got to a Google search saying to not speak to anyone about letting them have access to your machine via lmi1 as it is basically someone trying to get access to your computer. So I hung up. What is this all about?

Your first assumption to boxes appearing on your Mac unsolicited is that they are a scam.

I concur with Fox that MacKeeper is something you do not want to have on your Mac. The only thing is go for is causing problems and using an overly large amount of computer resources to do that.

Additional information on LMI1. It is a bogus site that attempts to get your permission to remotely connect to your Mac for nefarious purposes.

I almost fell for this scam today. When the lady over the phone told me to download the program, I actually did. A pop-up box showed up on the program asking for permission if she could access my computer. At that point, I knew it was a scam and she would hack my computer. I hung up.
