How can I add special characters in Pages version 5.5.3?

Starting the 10.3.3 Special Characters has a new name, Emoji & Symbols. But it is still the Character Viewer. You may need to "expand" it to get the full version.

Typing beta in the search box should get you that.

Why don't you give feedback to Apple as to how obscure the Pages 5 User Interface is?

I think the new name for Special Characters and the way Character Viewer behaves are the same for all apps.

If you find it hard to see exactly where the arrow is, take a look at this tutorial. Note that you can also scroll down the Emoji list and you'll get to the Special Characters.

option-s will get you a lower case beta (ß) directly from he keyboard (Canadian English or US layout).

The Keyboard Viewer is still available, too, and still named Keyboard Viewer.

That is not lower case beta, it is Eszett or scharfes S, once used in German but now redacted for ss.

Thanks , Peter. That explains why it it called for with option-s, which had me wondering.

Back to 'drag from the Character viewer Emoji and Symbols,' then, where the 'real' beta shows up on a search for 'beta'.
