Accidentally disconnected my fan cable.

Hi everyone. Sorry for being an idiot. I accidentally disconnected my fan cable while I was re-seating the RAM and Installing a new hard drive. I can't see anywhere for the cable to connect to. Can anyone help?

OK need to know year built and size of your MBP.

Also better pictures of the fan area would be helpful. Is that the bottom of the connector body we're looking at at the end of the fan wires?

Your fan looks dirty, you should remove it and use a brush to clean the blades. Be careful removing the black tape (and foam?) between the fan outlet and the heat transfer radiator. Check the front of that grill there's probably a buildup of lint on it.

Does the wired connector reach as far as those metal pins on the logic board, in the

picture, where a few red wires appear next to it? If it does, had you looked closely to

see if the pin configuration in the jack would work, if you orient the socket 180° from

the previously-tried position? Usually these items are intended to work only one way.

Otherwise, I suggest you call ahead and ask an independent Apple authorized service

provider if one of their techs could give you about 5 minutes of time, at a bargain rate,

so you can put the computer back together again. You may not have to pay for a hour

if you are lucky. But most shops (except genius bar at Apple Store) have a minimum.

Sorry to not offer much help at some distance, and I don't know an Apple product

specialist with training in repair of portable MacBook computers.

Good luck & happy computing! 🙂

"So it looks like i've accidentally pulled the connecter off the logic board?"

Exactly. That connector lifts straight up out of that socket. See those 4 pins sticking out? That's where it was soldered to "lands" on the logic board.

Here's a pic of the fan connector in place on (I believe) an i7 2012 13":

Um, it's upside down and I'm in a hurry to get out of here but you can see where those 4 pins are soldered to the lands on the board. The connector is not pushed all the way into the connector so you can get an idea of how it is inserted.

Here's the socket by itself:

and the connector:

So to solder that back will take a steady hand and a micro tip. I might have an easier way to do that if you're interested.
