How do I add a highlight to a replaced word?

I'm using pages 5.2.2 (1877) on a OSX 10.9.5 mac laptop. I arrange plays for my actors and like to highlight the names of their characters on each line. Example:

JONATHAN [pink highlight]

What do you want?

JANE [green highlight]

What do you think?

In a previous version of Pages, I was able to replace JONATHAN with the same word in pink highlight. Now it'll only replace the text, even after I do "copy style" and "replace style". Just text, no highlight. Any ideas?
