==========
OS X Yosemite (10.10)
Use Software Update/App Store to update your OS to OS 10.10.3. Also, update everything SU/AS has to offer for your computer. When done, repair permissions and restart your computer.

Thank you for the reply!
This is an I Mac 27”.
I'm running Yosemite 10.10.3
I’ve repaired permissions and restarted the MAC.
I talked to Apple Care about this and the first rep didn’t know how to fix it so he sent it to a “senior advisor”.
I’ve been playing “phone tag” with him for a few days now.
I found an article online that said to “add some languages” and choose one (other than US English) and then re select US english again.
No change in behavior after that.
I’ve tried dictation in Text and Pages so far and the program still doesn’t respond (I see the mike and it fills and empties)
I moved the volume every which way possible and there doesn’t seem to be any difference.
There is either no response or a totally different word is inserted when I read a sentence.
I’ve tried single words and ignores that.
I tried “open the pod bay doors HAL” and it tried to write that twice without the word open or bay. (that’s as close as i’ve come to it working)
Sometimes the program writes "cap that" or "bold that" in small letters above the microphone logo.
This isn’t for a business or anything, I just want to be able to use all my computers features.
I love Siri on my iPad air and wish they had it on my I Mac.
Again, thank you for your kind reply and suggestions.
Nicholas
PS I don’t know what you mean by “SU/AS” but the software update says: "there are no updates available"

Not sure if this tutorial PDF will help as it pertains to the Speakable Items feature. Not sure if "dictation" is included: Speakable Items Tutorial: PlainTalk Spoken Commands

This is unacceptable especially if you are still under warranty and/or have AppleCare.
Call Apple Customer Relations - 1-800-275-2273. Ask politely & firmly that you want to be transferred to Customer Relations. Tell them exactly what you stated in your post.

Siri is already on your Mac. Her name is Samantha.
System Preferences>Dictation & Speech>Text to Speech. Click on the System Voice arrow & you will see a list of male & female names. Samantha is the 2nd female name. Select it.
