Can I use my iMac (late 2009) as a monitor for my new Mac Pro? (late 2013)

Instead of having to buy an entirely new monitor (because the new Mac Pro broke the bank), can I connect and use my older iMac as the primary display for my Mac Pro?

Mac Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

If the iMac is a 21-inch model, not without using a product such as ScreenRecycler over a network.
