No voice directions with Maps app

I have an iPhone 4 running ios 7.1.2.

When I drive using the Apple Maps app, I do not get voice directions. I see in this explanation that there is a little speaker icon. I do not see the speaker icon.

How do I get directions via voice?

The google maps app does speak to me.
