Default to SMS instead of iMessage

I have a contact that has an iPad and a cell phone. When I send a text message to the contact it gets sent as an iMessage which arrives only at the iPad which is usually sitting at home instead of wherever the contact is. I can turn off iMessage and send the text and it goes to the phone but I'd like to have it setup to default to SMS instead of iMessage for that particular contact. Is that possible?
