How do I free up hard drive space on a MacBook Pro. My 250 gig hard drive is almost full and my performance is horrible. Some I want to delete, some I want to save to a Seagate external. How do I know I'm not just copying it to the Seagate external drive instead of freeing up space? Thank you.

When you have copied data to the external HDD, then you must drag the copied material on your MBP to to trash and empty trash. Then you will have reclaimed space on your MBP HDD for new data.

Thanks, that gave me free space but my performance is still very slow. A while back I saw a window that said "you have incompatible 3rd party software that might be the problem." How do I find that third party software? My Mac is 99.999% Apple software!!

Examine your applications folder and determine what is not an Apple application. Often Anti-Virus, so called 'cleaning applications' and so called 'performance' applications can slow down and corrupt a Mac.

Download and post an Etrecheck report. That MAY offer a clue or two:
