I received a pop-up Safari help message stating that malicious activity was spotted and I needed to call the included number to deal with it. Was this a scam?

This is the approximate message: Malicious activity discovered on Safari call included number for help. Then I was told I needed to purchase an Apple securuity network to halt the intrusion. Was this a scam?

Definitely a scam. Was this on a computer? iDevice? Did you call the number? Allow them access?
