Extreme slow down since Yosemite update...multiple restarts

Hi,

Having some kind of issue that I can't figure out, hoping this community can help. Any info is appreciated before I do a clean install of Yosemite. Since I've installed Yosemite or maybe the updates, I've experienced nothing but troubles. Already done one clean install of Yosemite to find myself back in same problem where my iMac becomes totally unresponsive or it will take a minute or so to do one task. Spinning beachball always between tasks. Is my drive failing? Do I need to get new one? Do I need a clean install on Yosemite...I'm stumped. Really trying to avoid the clean install unless its needed. I've tried DiskWarrior, CleanMyMac, Repair Permissions, resetting PRAM, and others but will no luck to get the snap back in to this machine. Let me know what you think, here is report:

Problem description:

Extreme slowdown since Yosemite install. To the point to where I can’t use my iMac. Upon a restart it responds to tasks for short time, but once goes idle for a bit, becomes unresponsive and spinning beachball.

Remove CleanMyMac.

http://macpaw.com/support/cleanmymac/knowledgebase/how-to-uninstall-cleanmymac-2

Reset SMC. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

Choose the method for:

"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".

Start up in Safe Mode. http://support.apple.com/kb/PH18760

Repair Disk. http://support.apple.com/kb/PH5836

RAM

Upgrading RAM to 8GB will help.

Select Macintosh HD as the Startup Disk.

“Set the default startup disk” http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1310

Most of the stuff that you installed is junk and possible malware... But now to the solution.

1. UNINSTALL ALL OF THAT SOFTWARE.

2. Your OS may be corrupt. I hate to say this, but it happens often. To fix this, turn off your mac and wait 10 seconds after the white spinny wheel goes away (On the black screen during the shut down process). After it shuts off entirely, press and hold the "Command" and "R" keys and press the power button. Do NOT let go of the "Command" or "R" keys until you see the Apple logo on your screen!!! By doing this, you Mac will boot into it's recovery partition. Once you boot into the recovery partition, click on the disk utility option. Once in disk utility, press "Verify Disk." If you see any red text/it tells you to click repair disk...

Option 1. (Suggested) Reboot into OS X, back up your data, reboot into the recovery partition, and re-install OS X. You will lose all data unless you backed it up!

Option 2. Back up your data (for safety... 🙂) Click "Repair Disk," and wait for it to finish. I cannot say if you will lose any data or not, but I would back it up just to be safe!!!

If you didn't get any red text, CONGRATS! Your mac isn't corrupt and there isn't a need to do anything else in OS X recovery. Reboot, and share your experience here in the fourms.

Good Luck!

You're getting the usual results of posting "etrecheck" stuff on this site.

The startup drive is failing, or there is some other internal hardware fault.

Back up all data on the drive immediately if you don't already have a current backup. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.

If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair

Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.

*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

I removed the other so called "junk" and anything outside of the main operating system that I thought would interfere. I ran disk check and it found a red error, repaired disk and since have checked it few times and it comes up disk appears to be ok. Repaired permissions and that checks out fine also now.

Oddest thing this morning, I came down to a sleeping mac and it woke up it up and ran beautifully. Normally when sitting idle like that, it becomes unresponsive to a single task and a restart is needed. But it was short lived, had to let my dog out, 10 minutes gone by and sat back down at my imac to find out it became unresponsive again. By unresponsive I mean a single easy task becomes about a 1 minute delay before it does anything and during that time the spinning beachball is happening before it moves on to next task...which basically makes my imac useless.

Only time I can use the imac is like now after I restart and keep tasking on it. But as soon as it idles for few minutes, becomes unresponsive again. Trying to avoid a clean install again just because it takes me weeks to get everything back in order again. Don't have the luxury of sitting here for hours putting everything back in place. Maybe weeks is bit exaggerated (days). But what's to keep this from happening again after clean install? Don't want to do this every 2-3 months, this just happened recently for the first time. Never really had any other issues like this prior to Yosemite.

Any info is appreciated, dumbfounded,

John
