iphone 6 does not backup to iTunes or iCloud

My iPhone 6 will not backup to either iTunes or iCloud. Here is the error message from iTunes:

iCloud message is "The last backup could not be completed" each time I try.

I have more than enough room on my Mac to back this up but I still get the error message.

Any thoughts?
