New Mac-transferred photos to external hard drive before migration
Then I deleted the file. Yet here they are on my new Mac. How did that happen?

I copied the photos folder and contents onto the external hard drive and then moved the original photo on the old Mac to trash. However, I realize what happened as I'm writing this. I migrated from Time Capsule and this was done the day before so that is why it's there. Nothing like answering your own question!
