Usually when it runs the boot loader and stops it an kernel issue.
Boot up in safe mode and run a permission repair on the disk.
With off the macbook.
Hold the shift key and switch it on, continue to hold the shift button.
It will start to load then you can release the shift key.
Once it starts up the screen will make a few lines don't be alarmed its normal.
Go to disk utility (spotlight search is the easiest)
Click on macintosh hd ( the 2nd on from the top ) this is seen as your partition.
Verify your permissions and disk then run the repairs.
After all this reboot your device and it will startup.
If this does not work run a recovery mode. You will loose all data that is not backed up.
Hold R and switch on. continue holding R till a different screen appears.
You will see a recovery mode there and you will be able to restore to the default system.
After that i would recommend you to update your mac to OS X.
