You have way too many 3rd party apps automatically startup up when you boot and/or login. 4GB is not much RAM these days. All of the EtreCheck kernel extenions, launch daemons, launch agents that do NOT start with com.apple, are 3rd party additions.

Also get rid of your anti-malware software. It is not needed, and you do not have the RAM to support it.

How does Mac OS X protect me?

-- You really have to uninstall Avast! it is crippling software on your mac. This really is your problem.

-- Uninstall all three adblockers f(Ghostery, AdblockerPlus, Adblock) in Safari.

if you really want an adblocker then only install Adblock in Safari.

-- IMHO you have enough Ram. See in Activity Monitor in the Memory tab, on the bottom under memory pressure. If you are using "ram-eaters" then you will see when you have to upgrade the ram.

-- Remove all entries in SystemPreferences->Users&Groups->LoginItems, with the minus sign underneath.

and then restart.
