copy or move from external drive to Iphone 5c?

hi,

How does one either copy or move some photos from an external hard drive to a iPhone 5 c? I tried to do this in iTunes but it would not work. I sent myself some of the photos and that worked but there must be an easier way. I have saved these photos to protect them from a computer that was dying. The photos are fine but what steps do I need to take to copy them into my iPhone?
