Book on iBooks stopped opening, won't download?

I went into iBooks to read my granddaughter's favorite book & it won't download. The regular image of the cover is gone & it has the little cloud, but when I hit it, nothing happens. I went in to the book store looking for it & it's gone. My purchases button has a "1" on it, but nothing shows up there either.
