MacBook Pro and NX420 Wifi connection

I have never been able to hook my MacBook Pro retina display up to my NX 420 Printer Wi-Fi. It works fine on the cable. When I try to add it as a printer with the IP address it says it's searching for software and then it comes back and says that it's not available.
