I have an IPOD classic 6th generation. If you want to save what's on you dad's IPOD and then add more, just sync your IPOD and manually add your selections while Syncing the IPOD. If you don't want to keep what's on your dad's IPOD, just sync your the IPOD to your ITUNES.

If do not care about saving the media from your father's iPod. Plug it into iTunes and click the restore button. This will reset the iPod back to factory settings.


If you want to backup the media on the iPod then follow this article

Copy music from Ipod to new computer...

Then restore the iPod and synchronize the music back over to the iPod. This will allow you to keep the existing media as well as synconize more media in the future.
