Q: how long does it take after removing icloud lock

... before I can activate iPhone? Previous owner swears he removed it this morning but Apple IMEI check says it is still locked.

    Hello

    It is instant,

If it still shows it's locked after a few seconds, they didn't remove the device from their iCloud Account

    Have them visit iCloud.com

They will need to "erase" and then remove the device from their account.

    Best of Luck

No, we never solved it, we had to work around it.

The original owner removed the device from his account, but it kept showing locked. After waiting several days we gave up that route. The original owner gave us his apple id and password, and when we typed them directly into the phone it unlocked right away.

To be clear, you can remove iCloud lock remotely via:

    1. www.icloud.com, logging in and using 'find my iPhone'

    2. OR via the iPhone 'find my iPhone' app from another device.

However, often people 'erase' the device, but that is only step 1.

After erasing the device, it MUST also be REMOVED from your list of devices before the iCloud lock is fully removed and the IMEI will show clear when checked at www.icloud.com/activationlock .

This second step is what people often overlook, and assume that since they 'erased' the phone, that everything is clear, when it is not.

Thank you for answering somebody else's one year old question. Instructions on how to remove lock can  be found here

Turn off Find My iPhone Activation Lock - Apple Support

Now since it seems that we want to help people, lets try to answer some current questions, should we?

Actually I found Canadianshiver's answer very helpful. Even if the question is a year old, lots of other people search for similar questions and then don't need to ask the same question as it's been nicely answered.

absolutely correct, but the goal of forums mainly to help people with current questions, so if you since you learned something will do that it would be more appreciated by those people in immediate need.
