Yes, as I said above... my friend has an older iPhone 4 (not 4s) and wants to upgrade to ios7 or the most recent compatable operating system. How do we do it?

The iPhone 4 can upgrade to iOS 7.1.2. If it is using iOS 5 or above, attach the iPhone to a power source such as the charger, be on a WiFi network, go to Settings > General > Software Update and it will search for the update and then ask you to download and install.
An alternate method is to attach to a computer running iTunes, select the iPhone from the devices in the left iTunes window and select Software Update in the main window panel.
