iTunes match - on iPhone iPad split albums and wrong album artists

Hello everyone,

I'm having real trouble with iTunes match. So I have no issue actually playing the music, but the albums are being not only split but they have the wrong album artists. None of the issues are present on iTunes on my Mac, its all on iOS.

Firstly, I'd say my iTunes library was pretty much well organised pre-match. Albums had the correct art, the ID3 tags were such that everything looked correct and made for functional searches when using an iOS device.

All of my issues seem to be because of match. At first when I saw the split albums I thought it was just the ID3 tags being messed up somewhere but I've since wasted hours experimenting and I just can't seem to fix it.

I've tried (in no particular order)

Turning match on and off

Re-booting all devices

Making sure the iOS devices had all music wiped (via iTunes) before enabling match

Using iTunes to correct ID3 tags

Using the Yate ID3 editor to correct ID3 tags

When I say correct I mean select all tracks in a given album and make sure:

Album artist equal

Artist equal

I've tried the 'add a space on to artist / album artist then take it back off' trick

Remove any other 'mixed' fields such as composer

Check there is only one cover art file and it's the same for all tracks

Remove any mixed sorting fields

Renamed files

Renamed folders (then re-imported)

Now the interesting thing is that there is no pattern, some are correct and some are not. One album for example is Energy Never Dies by the black eyed peas. I bought this from a shop and ripped it. It's split into 3, one artist is the Black Eyed Peas, one is Elton John and one is Rhianna.

I've noticed the when the artist is wrong it's always the same artists (Elton John and Rhianna for example)

Interestingly, the wrong artists are different on the iPad to the iPhone, but the albums are split the same. Also, the one of the bad artists is one I made up for a mix tape, which makes me think the bad info is not on Apple's servers.

It's as if some old album artist data on the device from what was on there pre-match is corrupting things, but I don't fancy wiping the devices.

One way around it is to delete all artist and album artist info, but keep the album name the same (for grouped tracks). I can then search by album name and the album art is correct. This isn't ideal though as I cannot search by artist.

I've done some research before coming on here and I've tried quite a few fixes what have been suggested but I'm still no further forward. I'm hoping someone has some ideas otherwise I'm going to go through my library and remove all of the artist info as the work around like I say.

I'd like to report the bug to Apple but I can't seem to see a way of doing so. If anyone knows how to do this I'd appreciate a tip please.

Many thanks in advance,

Kai

been directed to this after my iPhone library descended into chaos. See screenshots. iTunes on my MacBook relatively unaffected but I have noticed its forcing some changes to match its store - eg artwork to match theirs, not what I have actually on the cd I brought... Etc etc. also seems to involve track and album artist confusion, as well as compilations.

AApple are now removing posts on this forum. No problem as over on Mac rumours forum similar outbreak of discontent is building. this cannot be controlled by apple. This is an utter shambled from the company. I noticed the problem since monday. Others have gradually seen this issue arise since then. Nearly a week later and still no word or fix and in that time apple support in my experiences have played ignorant and refused to escalate to a software engineer - who i am sure knows something is up. The left hand doesnt seem to know what the right is doing in Cupertino

I ran into this issue yesterday with 1 album showing up under the wrong artist and then today it has become more widespread. Like other i'm only having this problem on iOS, not desktop.

I tried the workaround where you delete and re-import, rename and rename... this worked for iTunes Match albums but it actually made things worse for albums that I had downloaded from iTunes Store. For the latter case it actually caused a bug where then I couldn't redownload the album from iTunes Store.

I called into apple support and they fixed the problem of not being able to re-download the album in question... but the support person said iTunes knows about the bug and they are working to fix it. When I pressed for more details about timeline, whether it will be fixed in the next iOS release or whether it will be fixed on their server side, etc, she just said that they actually don't know much about the bug and are researching.

I pointed them to this thread, but I guess we just have to deal with it for now. I hate to say this, but things have continually been going down hill (slowly) every since Steve Jobs passed away. I use Apple products because they are simple and they are extremely high quality and I don't have to think in order to use them. It pains me to see quality go down hill, because whether or not Apple knows it, that is the only thing that makes them stand out. There is no reason for people to buy albums on iTunes any more with Spotify around, the only reason I do is because it's simple and it works and I don't have to think.

Also, I just noticed that if you toggle off "Group by Album Artist" the problem goes way (of course now if you have compilation albums you have a different problem to deal with entirely).

So Apple if you are listening I think I have it figured out. One of my use cases was that it though that Coldplay - Ghost Stories had the album artist of "Garden State" I'm pretty sure this is because Garden State actually has a song on it from a Coldplay album (Don't Panic , from album Parachutes). So there must have been a case where the metadata for Coldplay - Don't Panic was being loaded and it didn't have a Soundtrack Artist, but for some reason it loaded the soundtrack artist from the other album this song was on, which was Garden State... then somehow this problem rippled out into the metadata of all the other Coldplay songs. That's where I would start looking if I were an Apple Developer, although, I wouldn't be an Apple Developer because Objective-C is just lame with all those NS structures.

UUnfortunately toggling off group by artist made little change. The mess changes a bit but still seeing split artists. Sweet is listed five teams, if I toggle it changes to two but if you go into the entry the same album is split several times.

i Checked my Apple TV again which runs older iOS and the sorting remains perfect on there. I even restarted it and disabled and re enabled match on the Apple TV to see if that forced a refresh and mess but it's still perfect. So just further confirms to me this is an ios 8.3 only issue

I've been having the same issue as of late, and the disintegration of my iOS library is spilling over into my Mac library as well. Not to mention that iTunes Match has had unusable performance lately, caught in endless 'Matching...' loops that never finish. This ordeal, Apple's lack of recognition and essentially the entirety of iTunes Match is just horrendous. My experience with it has entirely put me off the prospect of buying into Apple Music.

Same problem here. A few weeks ago, I noticed that some albums apeared more than once on my iPhone and that some tracks show the wrong artist. I see some albums now that I don't have at all, with tracks in them that should show up somewhere else. All my albums/artists info on iTunes on my mac are correct.

The suggestions mentiones until now are no option. I don't want to erase my iPhone and go through a lot of hassle to solve a problem that shouldn't be there in te first place. It seems the problem is with Apple, so they should solve it.

Same probelm here, happened yesterday when I purchased the new Tiesto's album on itunes.

Firstly the only album to be divided song by song as per previuos descriptions was the new one, without reading this post I came to the same solution given by Gary from Hong-Kong (delete from icloud/change name/re-add/modify name) and it worked, but after few seconds ALL my library was messed up as the new album. I have thousands compilations which now are completely messed up on my iOS Devices, while instead they look correct on Itunes MAC, iTuens PC and Apple TV.

Clearly it's an Apple Bug, which I hope it will be fixed soon! The good thing is in the following days this will happen to thousands itunes match users worldwide i guess, so it cannot be ignored by Apple!

And cannot be an option to do the process I did for the new Tiesto's Album for thousands artists.. we all are busy, have no time (neither will) to spend in this after having carefully organized on mac my iTunes Library.

This is a sort of unprofessional thing coming from Apple. Ruin what it's good is the exact way to make people leave from a brand.

Hope they come with a fix at the soonest..

Hello All,

Exactly the same problem here: Everything OK on my Mac but a complete mess on my iPhone.

I tried simple things like erasing all music on phone, deactivating iTunes Match on Mac and iPhone.

Nothing worked and when I see all you have tried I feel quite discouraged.

Waiting for a quick response from Apple since this situation is clearly not acceptable for a paying service.
