mail.app: invisible gmail account

i've added a gmail account to mail.app and it's showing up in the Internet Accounts pane of my System Prefs (with the Mail, Contacts, Calendars, and Messages boxes checked), but there's no sign of the account anywhere in mail.app - no associated mailboxes (including inbox), it doesn't appear in mail.app's accounts list, and mail.app isn't receiving mail sent to that address (or if it is, it isn't displaying it). yet when i try again to add the account, i get an error saying it's a duplicate.

what the @%$#??

In Mail, select Edit SMTP settings.

Remove any entries for Gmail.

In System Preferences > Internet Accounts

Remove the Gmail account.

Add the account back in Internet Accounts.

If you still don't see the account in Mail...

With Mail quit....

Go to the User's Library folder. This folder is hidden by default. To unhide: Select the Finder in the Dock. Under Go in the Menu bar > hold down the Option key and you’ll see the Library.

• Go to Containers. Drag the com.apple.mail folder to the Desktop

Log out under the Apple in the Menu bar

Log in and launch Mail.

Now try adding the account again in System Preferences
