ipod classic contents disappeared

When I connect my ipod classic to itunes it appears that the entire contents of it have now disappeared. Last week it was fine but suddenly nothing, anyone got any tips on how to get around this or what the problem may be? I have the contents (thankfully) saved on an external hard drive so can at least import from there again but would prefer to understand why in case it ever happens again
