When i connect my powered ethernet cable into my iMac it cannot connect and say that it has automatically found an IP address which is not correct and will not find my router.

When using the ethernet cable directly into iMac it works!!!

any ideas?? i'm using the latest OS X Yosemite (April 2015)

thanks

iMac (27-inch, Late 2012), OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

I'm assuming that when you say you connect the Ethernet cable directly to your Mac you mean you aren’t plugging it into the router but directly into the Mac. I also assume that when you say “powered Ethernet cable” you mean the cable that is plugged into the router. If not, correct me.

If my assumptions are right we can move forward. Since router issues can be a little tricky answering these two questions is important:

First, are there any devices plugged into the router other than the Mac you are trying to connect to it? If so are they getting online?

Second, what brand of router is it?
