the mail server imap.gmail.com is not responding

I suddenly started to receive the message: "the mail server imap.gmail.com is not responding" when I click on the Mail app. How do I fix this?

iPad 2, iOS 8.3

Follow up to my query: I was able to remedy the problem by deleting and re-installing. I also changed the password, but that might be irrelevant. The mail server has been working for the last several hours. Fingers crossed!

You can make an appointment with the Genius service at Apple to assist you. I received help from someone at IT at my place of work.
