May 5, 2015 6:31 AM in response to Annoyed_user10by gail from maine,In order to use an Apple ID without a credit card, you need to have set it up that way, meaning that you would have to have clicked on the download of the free app before actually setting up an ID.
At this point, you can either download a free app without being signed into the iTunes & App Store and then set up a new Apple ID to do the download, or you can put a credit card on your existing ID and once it is verified, you can then change it to "None":
If you do not see the "None" option after putting in the credit card:

May 5, 2015 6:34 AM in response to gail from maineby Annoyed_user10,I created the ID over a year ago and didn't have to add a credit card when i created it. i just went to use it today when attempting to download OS X Installer for Yosemite and it took me to a page to update info and won't let me continue without entering a credit card number.

May 5, 2015 6:36 AM in response to Annoyed_user10by Barney-15E,Because that is how the App Store works. An account requires a method of payment, whether you use it or not.
If you don't have the option of setting None for the payment type, you can try using a "gift" card, or use a credit card, then try to set as None.

May 5, 2015 6:37 AM in response to Annoyed_user10by gail from maine,So when you created the Apple ID, did you do it via the method described (i.e., by downloading a free app prior to setting up the ID)? Have you downloaded anything on that ID prior to today?
Cheers,

May 5, 2015 6:55 AM in response to Annoyed_user10by cdhw,You are using the Mac App Store Application from your Mac's Apple Menu to download Yosemite, not some scam-artist's fake website that you found via a search engine? Just checking...
I have recently set up a work-related Apple ID recently and had no trouble selecting 'none' as the method of payment from the row of credit card possibilities.

May 5, 2015 7:03 AM in response to cdhwby Annoyed_user10,This is the link i was at, and my account was created with no credit card and has been used on my iPhone and iPad for free apps for well over a year. The site is forcing me to now add a credit card. It said that this is the first time you have used the MAC Apps Store and sent me to a review link, where it wants a credit card. The previous apps i have downloaded were from the apps store on my mobile devices.
