My iMac has OS X 10.6.8 as it's operating system. It has a 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Due Processor and a memory of 4GH 1067 MHz DDR3. The Model Identifier is iMac10.1. Can this be upgraded to allow add ons such as newer printer/scanners?

Back up your data and check your applications for compatibility before upgrading. In particular, Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC programs such as versions of Microsoft Office prior to 2008.

I've read that Yosemite can really mess up my iPhoto (years of organizing). What do you mean by not upgrading all the way with Lion or Mountain Lion? Would this allow me to download newer drivers from a new printer/scanner.
1. You can buy an intermediate version of Mac OS X instead of upgrading your computer to the latest one.
2. Check the system requirements for the newer drivers.

The basic requirements for the new drivers was 10.7. so and intermediate version of Mac OSx would likely help. Can I just purchase this from the Apple store online and what exactly would I be asking for?
I'd go with Mountain Lion. It is what Lion should have been in my opinion. Also, Lion is no longer receiving security updates, but Mountain Lion is (so far). Based on my experience, iPhoto has worked fine in Yosemite, but you need version 9.6.1.
