I am considering finally updating to Yosemite and 10.2. (Currently on Mavericks and 10.1.4).
What are the 'best practices' for updating the OS while not putting your projects and media in jeopardy? I already have all my projects & libraries on an external, as well as my media. I've read all sorts of posts that talk of FCP not opening, being unstable, etc under Yosemite - should I hold off on updating?

As always, have confirmed good backups. Your libraries will need updating to be used with the new version. This does not affect your media, but it is a good idea to keep a separate backup of the old versions in the off chance you need to go back.
Yosemite is quite stable, and 10.2 is the best version of FCP X yet.
Just to add one suggestion to Luis' advice…take screenshots of your network settings and critical network service settings and put them into an easily accessible folder on your backup and/or print them and keep hard copies.

Excellent advice. You can also just take pictures of you screen and settings with your iPhone. We have started doing this before upgrades that have some risk associated.
