how do I deactivate imessage from my old iphone that is no longer in my possession so it doesn't receive any more of my imessages?

I have given my old iphone 5 away and completely reset all content and setting however my imessgae and icloud still seem to be logged in. How can i stop the old device from receiving my imessages. If i change the password for the apple ID will this help? I've tried to delete the email that the imessages sends and receives too but it says this email address could not be removed!! If it is un ticked is that enough to stop my imessgaes going to my old device?

the iphones both have the newest IOS

Help please!!

Not sure how this will work. The phone number I want to de-registered is still associated with the old device. I wouldn't be able to get the code if i give the number to de-register, as my current phone won't let me tick the number so receive imessage. How can i sort this out?
