Q: Why does my mac turn on and then turn off again???

I have a Jan 2011 27" iMac Desktop and I press the power button and it turns on, makes the sound and shows the apple and the loading bar. It turns itself off before the loading bar has got even half way (about 3 seconds). Any ideas please???

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

Restart in the Recovery Partition (Command + R) and open Disk Utility and run Repair Disk, if the HD passes all tests then it is not the HD. In that case exit DU and then re-install OS X from the Recovery Partition. This will not overwrite your data so please don't worry however it is ALWAYS smart to have a backup!!!!
