advised to type option 3 but that gave me #

It's SHIFT-3, not OPTION-3. Should be marked on your keyboard - #.

It depends on your keyboard language selection.


View that in 'System Preferences > Keyboard > Input sources'. If you want a better way to work out what shortcuts cause what output use the Keyboard viewer. In 'System Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard tab, enable the Show keyboard & character viewer in menu bar'.


Open Keyboard Viewer from the menu & hit the modifiers to see what they will output.
