Can iPad be paired with Apple TV (3rd generation) to use its keyboard rather than the hand held remote? The on-screen alphabet menu is awkward.

Can iPad Air be paired with Apple TV (3rd generation) in order to use the keyboard instead of Apple TV's alphabet menu? I have tried to pair them using Bluetooth, but the device (namely iPad), although discoverable, never shows up. Bluetooth simply keeps searching.

No, you cannot pair an iPad with an Apple TV to use the iPad’s onscreen keyboard. You can, however, pair the Apple TV with just about any Bluetooth physical keyboard on the market, including Apple’s own wireless Bluetooth keyboard.

Could Apple make this possible? Who knows. You might want to submit feedback to Apple and request the function.

Thank you jjkraw and vazandrew. Both answers were helpful. Vazandrew explained that the remote app on iPad would work --- not Bluetooth, which I was attempting to set up. Then jjkraw provided enough information to access the keyboard. FYI: Dragging from the bottom of the screen while viewing Apple TV's search alphabet in Movies (for example) brought up the keyboard. Success!
