OSX Yosemite 10.10.3 (MacBook Pro Early 2011)
After the recent (10.10.3 Supplemental) update today (May 5, 2015) , I am seeing the unusual name as my hostname

Open Sharing preferences and edit the Computer Name.
Not helping. I tried it before starting this thread. Restarted couple of times.
Is this in the Terminal window? If so then it's normal that your short name displayed. It's still unclear whether your issue is related to what appears in the Sharing preferences or elsewhere.

I am not sure who is heck is markconley, that's not my name.
Sharing is fine. It displays the name given under Sharing Preferences > Computer Name.
Perhaps you are using a computer that once belonged to another person. In any case try this:
Open the Terminal. At the prompt enter of paste:
sudo scutil --set HostName name-of-host
Press RETURN. Enter your admin password as prompted. It will not echo back to the window. Press RETURN, again. Provide your desired hostname for name-of-host.
The above should change the hostname permanently.
