Q: iPhone 6 plus intermittent unresponsive screen

So a couple days ago, my iPhone 6+ began having intermittent screen responsiveness. First time, I received a phone call and couldn't answer it because the swipe wouldn't work. I turned it off and back on with no luck. I reset it and that fixed it. That was the only issue that day. I the last few days it's becoming more frequent. Today alone I've had to reset it eight times.

What it's doing;

  • touch screen is unresponsive to touch entirely.
  • touch screen responds after a delay
  • I tap an app icon and the app two rows up opens instead.
  • from loch screen-can't answer phone calls or notifications.

Sometimes it just leave it alone and come back to it and it's fine. Sometimes I leave it alone and come back with same result and I have to reset it. Sometimes I reset it once and trying to unlock with touchscreen (because touch ID doesn't work after reset) doesn't work so I reset it twice. It has worked after the second time, so far.

The phone is in perfect condition. Never been dropped. Was updated to 8.3 the day it was released so the issue didn't arise immediately after an update.

Anyone having these issues?

iPhone 6 Plus, iOS 8.3

Update: Just brought to Apple Store who said they will replace the screen only... Hopefully this works! Did I get screwed by not getting a new phone while it's still under warranty?

I Too have had this problem. Started a couple weeks back.

I have tried many things posted. Nothing is working for me as of yet. For what these phones cost, it should not be a problem!

I see many users are having the same issue. So it is wide spread.

I am having the same issue, the recommended "fixes" are work arounds to a recurring problem and not a permanent solution. I have been a loyal apple user for about 15 years and own a Apple desktop, multiple laptops, multiple iPads, Apple TV, and have had 4 generations of iPhones.  I love the IOS. but I felt compelled to upgrade to the iPhone 6 Plus because the iPhone 5 I had was giving me hardware problems, now I am suffering angst from the same unresponsive screen issues every else seems to be complaining about.  I told my wife I am almost at the point that I want to switch to a Galaxy phone, but have been hesitant since I like the seamless integration between devices that using Apple products affords me.  However, that luxury may no longer be worth the frustration of counts poser ons/off, resets, and the constant search for a permanent solution that Apple appears to be ignoring.

Mario49, I have two questions for you: "Is it the devices or the IOS that is defective? and more importantly,"Wwhen can iPhone users expect Apple to fix the problem??"

    hi guys,

i had the same issues and i think it's fixed now

here what I did *do it at your own risk, but I think no harms to try

    1. Connect the phone to computer with iTunes
    2. Put your iPhone into DFU mode, here's how:
    3. Turn off the device by holding the Sleep/Wake or Power button and swiping it off
    • Hold the power button for 3 seconds
    • Begin holding the Home button without releasing the Sleep/Power button for 10 seconds
    • Release the power button and continue holding the home button until you get a popup from iTunes that your device is recognized as being in recovery mode.
    • That's it, you're in DFU mode

       4. Unplug the USB cable, and plug it again so that in your iTunes screen there's this recovery mode notification and 'restore iphone button' available. Click it.

       5. Let iTunes download the latest firmware, install and most importantly: "set as new iPhone" (don't recover your back up yet)

       6. Once it's ready, once again hit the 'Restore iPhone' button from iTunes, so that it will again reinstall the latest firmware, then set as new iPhone.

*I think point 5 is not the same as point 6, point 5 asks you to do it from DFU mode while point 6 does it from normal mode

--- If your phone has recovered back to normal, stop at point 6 --

--- if not yet, continue to  point 7 --

       7. At this stage, my phone was looking back to normal. Just when I thought it's all good, for a second I saw a slight horizontal line at the top. With no waste of time I straightly performed point 6 again. Later, still to click 'set as new iPhone'

So far, it works fine..no more glitches. Hopefully it helps.

Again, do it at your own risk.

    Cheers.

This did help me at first....

About a week later I had to do it again... and then it worked...and then had to do it again 5 days later... do it again... three days later.

Enough was enough. Just wanted it to work like it supposed to.

Yea.. it's just so many possible cases. My friend fixed the same thing just by trying to bend the phone with a thought that a part inside has been mislocated, and it works fine after that

Okay, so this happened to me a few months after getting my first 6 plus.  It happened (randomly, so I thought) and drove me crazy. I take good care of my phones to make sure it doesn't get water damaged or anything like that.  I buy the heavy duty phone cases and screen protectors  I eventually took it to the Apple store and at first she said something about my phone having too many logs open and it was freezing.  I was sure that wasn't the case because it wasn't exactly freezing but, the screen wasn't responding.  They said to give them an hour and come back so, I did.  Once I got back they told me they were just gonna replace the phone.  I got my new phone and everything was fine.  Earlier this week, as soon as I was changing my cases I installed a TechArmor glass protector, I had it on my previous iPhone 6 + (the one that I had to get replaced) and I thought it worked fine.  As soon as I installed it my phone became unresponsive and doing the same thing that the first iPhone 6+ did.  So, Apple isn't going to replace my phone for free again so I will just need to buy a new one but, first I will try to get the screen replaced tomorrow.  I'll be sure not to install the screen protector again.  I guess that the suction on the screen protector is so tight that it some how lifts up the front screen and throws something out of place.  But, I'm no expert on this.

TLDR:  Does any one notice this happening after they install something like gorilla glass or a tech armor screen protector?

I just tried the trick some one posted about pressing hard on the screen, I heard a click too and as of right now, it's working.  I hope that it lasts.  I hate the way Apple's customer service has changed over the years.  It seems like every problem is because of "water damage" these days.  Every time I take my laptop in with a problem, they say its water damage.  But, they'll hire anyone that can just click a few screens

In Response to the previous post. I use a case for my iPhone 6 because I believe in caution with such an expensive and delicate device. That being said, I don't use a screen protector and my phone is experiencing the same issue. It has been about 4 months now since the first occurrence. It happens more frequently as time goes by. Now my phone will work for a few hours and I have to hard reset it. I have tried everything from a restore from back-up, to numerous hard resets, to a complete restore as a new phone, and the problem persists. I would love to run to the Apple store and get help, but I work 6 days a week and the nearest Apple store is 2 hours away. I have called support and the Gentleman on the line was super supportive and helpful as far as asking me about what to do to fix it, but I have had 3 iPhones and am very knowledgeable about repairing the issues through typical troubleshooting. This problem cannot be fixed with basic resets. I believe in Apple and want to use their product, I just want their product to work. If anyone can enlighten me on some sort of fix or a number I can call to bypass the 2 hour trip to the Apple Store, I would be much appreciated.

I am currently experiencing the exact same issue. Unfortunately the earliest appointment available at my local Apple Store's Genius Bar is five days out.

In the meantime, I text-chatted with an Apple support rep. They suggested the screen might be loose (although not noticeable) and likely needs repair. The issue happens intermittently but still quite frequently for me. The most telling symptom is a flickering grey bar across the top of the screen. I can temporarily alleviate the problems by pressing down somewhat firmly on the top of the device, basically pinching it. This fixes the loose screen and makes the device functional, at least temporarily until I can get it in for repair.

This started to happen to me 2 days ago. My phone began to have the horizontal gray bar going far as half way. I went to the apple store and they said to make an appointment to come have the screen replaced. Then they just offered me a new one today. My mistake was not backing it up before going to the apple store. I didn't know they were going to give me a new one so I didn't back it up. I was on my lunch break and had to go back to work. By this time in the day my phone was still responding but just barley. I told the MAC guy I'd come back after work. I tried to back it up at work on the WiFi but it failed. When I got home I restarted it because it was not responding at all. Then when I tried to enter the passcode the touch screen wasn't working. Then I had the great idea of plugging it into my Macbook instead of doing it over the WiFI. But it was too late. In order to back up my phone I needed to enter the passcode. And the touch screen isn't working!!!! Tomorrow I'll go get my new phone without all data! Apple you are messing UP, on quality.

Nearly the same issue here.  I had it before and I think I uninstalled some apps which seemed to fix it. Unfortunately I did not make a note of what I did and which apps I uninstalled. My lines are very faint and ruN vertically. They appear over or near to the letters y,h,b. IPhone is not responding where the lines are. i am currently using it horizontally to type. But cannot do that all e time plus I don't want to do that all the time. And as a new product  I shouldnt have to.  Apple we need a solution, a permanent one.

I have 100% the exact same issue.

Mine started the same way too. Screen became unresponsive but then worked again a while later so I thought nothing of it. It happened again and then again. Eventually the phone would go an entire day being entirely unresponsive to touch.

I contacted apple support and they recommended...

    - Restarting the phone (sometimes fixes it, sometimes doesn't)

    - Backing up and restoring the phone (seems to resolve things for a little while whilst it restores but soon bad again after a day or so)

    - Wiping the phone entirely and setting up as a new phone (worked for a day or two then same occurred) - This effectively eliminated a software issue as the cause.

Eventually I took the phone to the Apple Store (I waited 3 hours for an appointment). They ran some tests and stated that it was a 'touchscreen accuracy issue'. They asked if I had a backup then took the phone in for repair. I traveled the same 40 miles it takes me to get back and pick the phone up. They had replaced the screen and said I was back up and running.

3 days later, same issue so I booked an appointment and waited another week to see someone only to be told that because the screen had already been replaced that they should just replace the phone then and there which they did. Brand new phone.

So I restored the phone with my iCloud backup in store then and there and all was OK.. now about a week later AND after updating to 8.4.1 every now and then I get grey/white, flickering at the top of the screen encroaching in to as much as a 5th of the screen itself. The touchscreen becomes mostly unresponsive, occasionally opening apps at random like I've touched it in different places to where I've really touched it.

This new trick can last anywhere between 5 seconds and 5 minutes and seems to (maybe) be linked to the accelerometer because sometimes when I go to show someone what it's doing it immediately stops.

I'm fairly convinced this is a software issue and NOT a hardware issue.

I too suspect that an app I have on the phone is cause this, but no idea which one. Maybe we need to get together and cross reference our apps to find a lowest common denominator?

    Hi,

Guys this seems related to the MOLEX LCD connection on the board, I just received 2 phones with the same issue, and this happen when you press the molex connection on the board, this is a level 3 and 4 support since is micro soldering and on the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus is hard, I will do some test changing this port or checking the board on the microscope and let you know, but for sure is related for the connection, I tried 2 new screens and it happens when you press the connection on the board.

    Thanks

Posting an update, it was the molex connection (LCD) Connection on the screen, it was dirty, just make sure is properly connected or clean, if you have never opened your phone it may be disconnected when you drop it, so its causing interference. Let me know your results. I just clean that on the 2 6 plus phones and it worked properly =)

    Thanks
