Q: iPhone 6 plus intermittent unresponsive screen

So a couple days ago, my iPhone 6+ began having intermittent screen responsiveness. First time, I received a phone call and couldn't answer it because the swipe wouldn't work. I turned it off and back on with no luck. I reset it and that fixed it. That was the only issue that day. I the last few days it's becoming more frequent. Today alone I've had to reset it eight times.

What it's doing;

  • touch screen is unresponsive to touch entirely.
  • touch screen responds after a delay
  • I tap an app icon and the app two rows up opens instead.
  • from loch screen-can't answer phone calls or notifications.

Sometimes it just leave it alone and come back to it and it's fine. Sometimes I leave it alone and come back with same result and I have to reset it. Sometimes I reset it once and trying to unlock with touchscreen (because touch ID doesn't work after reset) doesn't work so I reset it twice. It has worked after the second time, so far.

The phone is in perfect condition. Never been dropped. Was updated to 8.3 the day it was released so the issue didn't arise immediately after an update.

Anyone having these issues?

iPhone 6 Plus, iOS 8.3

I too have this problem for the last few days,

    - I did hard reset

    - I removed my glass screen protector

    -I restarted several times

None of the above works for me.

I have read from one of the forum that when the screen is un-responsive, gently give a twist to phone by handling on the four corners-I did the same and immediately the touch started working.

So this brings me a concern that this issue is with hardware and not software. So the aluminium body gets pressed while in pocket so people are getting this issue- perhaps some people get immediately and some later. For me it took 18 months to face this problem.

Hope this helps and if any other finding I shall update.

I have the exact same problem.

Iphone screen flickering with grey bar on top of the screen => screen becomes unresponsive

I am on second year of warranty and ISP should take care of it but I can't find an invoice they require. Apple Geniuses ask 300€ to replace it, although they admitted that the issue is known by Apple...

Still, I agree with some of the posts about a software issue and not a hardware one, because it started to happen after an update (9.2 I think) and I found a workaround.

    Restart your phone

    Go to settings/Touch ID

Disable the first item (Unlock iphone with touchID)

Now you need to type your code to unlock the phone, but in my case the unresponsive behaviour doesn't occur anymore. That's why I'm pretty sure it is related to an update of the fantastic new feature 3D touch which messes around with devices without it.

Is there any Apple people to answer us about this issue ? Every year user care and device quality lower. I am pretty angry about that and ask myself why I still buy Apple products...

    -david

Grey bars is the indicator, for sure, of a hardware problem. Not A problem. THE problem. All apparent software fixes are illusions. It can be that a total restore heats up your phone enough to confer a little protection (maybe things expand and tighten up) for a bit, but the problem will return.

And the thing is, when you have the grey bars, even intermittently, the problem is hardware, AND it will steadily get worse. Period. You may be able to stretch out the demise of the functioning touchscreen by putting regular English on the phone, by pressing and twisting just so, but it will follow a Relentless. Downhill. Course. Just so you know.

What I don't understand is how I can get 3 successive phones and all have the same problem.

I literally turned on a device yesterday - and it had grey bars and a non-responsive screen from the get go!  Sure Apple should be looking at this issue seriously and swapping out phones with it immediately.  I brought my phone back to a store today and they were aghast as they only gave it to me yesterday.

At the same time, they couldn't replace the phone - it has to go to apple to be replaced.  I have no faith that I'm not going to get another phone with the same issue.

I had the same issue on my iPhone 6 Plus 128 Gigs. Since last July I have same problems.

I still don't know how to solve the problems.

More than likely getting  a refurbished phone that had the same problem and they just put a new case on

I hear you on your problem. Around 3 weeks ago I started getting the dreaded grey bar of slow death on my touchscreen. It just keeps getting progressively worse until you cannot even use the phone.I cant even access it right now because I did a hard reboot and can't put my password in due to the problem. It seems to be a problem with the touchscreen chip that tends to work itself loose severing the connection.

I have had at least 12 cell phones in my lifetime and have never once had a problem with a screen before.

When Samsung decided to quit allowing upgradeable micro sd memory and replaceable battery I thought I had might as well buy a iphone. Besides mediocre battery life in my Galaxy S4 I had never had a problem with it for 4 years. I must say that Apple battery life on the iphone 6+ is awesome !  Well I am having a replacement phone sent to me and hopefully, keeping my fingers crossed that it does not have the same screen problem that this phone has.

I had the same problem - touchscreen on iPhone 6 was fine one moment, the next nothing. It would take a half hour of locking and unlocking my phone to type one text. I read all the tips on how to fix the "bug", nothing worked. A week later, I happened to drop my phone and shatter the glass. When I went to have the glass repaired, the guy told me he would have to replace the piece underneath the glass for the touchscreen, too. The phone has worked fine ever since. It's not a bug, it's a hardware issue. Save the frustration and hassle and ask them to repair it!

Guys, this is not a bug. I had the same problem (and posted on it about a year ago) until I finally gave up and got an iPhone SE. I realized it was a hardware issue when I noticed that if I gently squeezed the phone, the screen would become responsive. I'm not the only one who discovered this "solution". Try it out. Unfortunately, no software update will fix that.

Remember all the complaints about these phones bending with the redesign? And then with the 6s/6s Plus, they used a different anodized aluminum. To my knowledge, Apple never acknowledged the problem, they just quietly fixed it with subsequent models. With the SE, it seems that they are recognizing that the beveled, thinner redesign was not really adequate.

    Good luck.

I am having the same problem...Google has led me here.

The touchscreen has always been a bit "buggy" but the last few days the grey bars have appeared and are getting worse. I have a Genius Bar appointment in 5 days (earliest...) and hope they are able to fix/swap the phone without fee  (I got my original 6+ nearly two years ago, but shattered the glass a year ago and it was swapped for my current). I was not planning on upgrading for another year.

Your tip to gently twist the phone has been working for me, so I totally buy the argument that theres something that's gotten knocked loose.

FWIW this is my 4th iPhone, all of which have still have perfectly functioning touchscreens. As does my 5 year old iPad. ****, my touch screen worked perfectly with shattered glass inside a Ziplock bag for the 4 days I had to wait to for my genius bar appointment last year. This leads me to the belief this is a huge flaw in the design.

Twisting it a little might work for a while then it will totally go out. I also found that if it warms up a bit it also helps.

Just like the old days, there were TV repair shops that would fix TVs. Now there are local repair shops that fix out of warranty smart phones and tablets. Got mine fixed and it's working like a charm!
