if i delete pictures from my phone do they stay in the icloud?

I have pics on my iphone 5. I have never had luck using or understanding icloud. I want to free up some room on my phone, but do not want to lose my pics. It looks like I have room in my icloud storage. Can I move the pics to icloud, and delete them from my phone?
