Q: I have just bought my first Mac and I hate it !!!

cannot receive mail. Connection doctor shows all mail connected . Have taken offline and put back on line. Closed and re-opened mail. Nothing works. I really wish I had stuck with a PC...

Now go and check the setup, write the settings down and post them here. I need to see both IMAP and SMTP settings.

Actually, Im not expecting to resolve the person’s problem.

Yes. I was trying to coax details.

They may not be in perfect order in a diagnostic, but the original post didnt leave much to work on.

If the iPad mentioned works - then he/she needs to start thinking about the difference in setup, seems to me.

In the Mavericks forum: presuming it wasn’t done by mistake: shouldn’t a new machine ship with Yosemite?

I'M not sure of the hub model but it is an older version which has never been problematic. Works with my iPad, phone and old PC just fine

    And the email account settings?

This is what BT say they should be:

    IMAP

    Incoming Mail Server: mail.btinternet.com

Port: 993 (this should be automatically populated if you tick the SSL Encryption)

SSL Encryption: Enabled (but not STARTTLS)

Username: your email address including the @btinternet or @btopenworld.com part

    Password: your btinternet password

Please do NOT enable "secure password authentication" (SPA). It's not needed when you use SSL encryption and won't work.

If your IMAP client supports it, we recommend you also set up the following folders:

    Trash

    Sent Items

    Drafts

    SMTP

    Outgoing Mail Server: mail.btinternet.com

Port: 465 (this may not be automatically populated on selection of SSL, so you'll need to check this)

SSL Encryption: Enabled (but not STARTTLS)

    Authentication: PLAIN

Username: your email address including the @btinternet or @btopenworld.com part

    Password: your btinternet password

    iCloud Mail Account

Go to System Preferences>iCloud: switch Mail off, wait a moment, switch it back on again.
