Macbook pro hdmi display not working on insignia LCD TV

I have a belkin mini display port to hdmi adapter. This works great with my Sharp TV in my living room, however, I have a smaller Insignia LCD TV in the office/bedroom that simply does not work as an external display. When I connect it to my Macbook Pro the screen resolution will change and both screens will flicker as though the display was detected, however the computer display never appears on the TV. It will then flicker back to the old resolution. Im wondering if my TV is just not compatible as an external mac display. Is that possible? The HDMI port on the TV works fine with my Amazon Fire TV stick, so I know it isnt the display, and the same cord and adapter work fine with my other TV.

Any Ideas what the problem could be?
