Is there a way to select a favorite within a favorite once it's been selected after FCP has been closed than opened? Or at least reselect?

Not sure I understand. Do you mean change the section range of a clip that's had a selected range favorited?

I would like to select favorites within my favorites, in essence refining my selections or. at the very least, redefine my favs.
Are you talking about FCPX or FCP ?
There is only one level of favorite, but there are unlimited keywords and there are smart collections.
If you add a keyword like "superfav" or whatever, you can have a keyword collectionl; and you can, say, create a smart collection containing all the sections of clips that are marked favorite and satisfy some additional criteria, like having the keyword "awesome" or whatever. The possibilities are endless. Use judiciously.
