Hi Out There!
Learned my lesson. Don't keep mac open around cats. Mine did so this morning now there is a black dialog box at bottom left that seems to monitor my activities and places a black box around things on the page. Also files seem scrambled. Somehow a setting got disturbed and I want to figure out what and how to correct?
Mac OS X (10.6.8)
Turn off VoiceOver in the Universal Access or Accessibility pane of System Preferences.

Thanks Niel - that removed the box. The second part is not resolved. When I open a folder on the desktop instead of just the contents opening I get on the left column everything on my desktop. Not a big deal but something is causing it that can probably be rectified. Let me know if you have the answer for that one. Thanks much!
Have you tried restarting?
Kitty likely toggled Hide/Show Sidebar: Cmd-Opt-S to toggle back and forth.
