Q: Where did all my photos go? How come can't use iPhoto anymore?

Hello,

So, like an idiot I'd down the new Photos update on my MBP Yosemite 10.10.3

Now it's the new logo for Photos and it shows I have 190 photos versus the 1000's that were there last week!

Freaking out.  The one time I didn't do a backup.

When I try to launch iPhoto (version 9.6 and reads 1.9gb -- still in my applications folder) it tells me that it can't launch because it's not a compatible version with Yosemite and suggests I go to the App Store to update.  This makes no sense -- at least to me -- considering everything is still the same.

Please, if someone could tell me how to fix this, I'd really appreciate.  Can I uninstall this new photos app and just revert to iPhoto?

With Yosemite you need iPhoto 9.6.1, only that version is fully compatible.

If you not yet have 9.6.1, update as described here:

Get iPhoto 9.6.1 if you didn't update before OS... | Apple Support Communities

The main idea is to move the iPhoto app to the Trash, so Spotlight does not see it as installed, reload the AppStore, and then to try to download again from the App Store - from your Purchases tab, not from the main page, since you can neither buy iPhoto nor update it, but you can reinstall, if your AppleID is associated with it.    If you do not see iPhoto on the Purchases tab, try to unhide your Purchases as described on this page:

The current version of iPhoto is 9.6.1

Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1

If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash

Install the App from the App Store.

Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?

iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

The new photos.app could probably not find your iPhoto Library and crated a new Photos library instead. Where is your iPhoto Library tired? In your Pictures folder or on an external drive?
