I have an iphone 5 (ios that had imessages I wanted to keep. My daughter used the phone and changed the appleid for imessage. Now only her imessages are visible. is there anyway for me to retrieve the imessages from my own apple id?

Have you tried signing out your daughter's Apple ID in Messages and signing yours back in? Go to Settings>Messages, click on Send & Receive and then on the Apple ID. Click on Sign out, then sign in your own ID.

Only if you have a backup of the device with the messages in it. Then you would have to restore the device from that backup. iMessages are stored locally on the phone, not in the cloud, except a backup. Logging back into your Apple ID would not bring the iMessages back.
