Using Mac OSX 10.10.3 (Yosemite); browser: Safari Version 8.0.5 (10600.5.17)

I subscribed to NYTimes.com in May 2012. At the time, I was able to view the article, the comments posted about the article by others and post comments myself. Sometime during the past year, I was no longer able to see the comments posted by others, let alone post my own. Unfortunately, I did not record when it happened so can’t draw any conclusions about source.

I didn’t know what caused it and could still read the articles so I didn’t pursue it right away. But I had to start somewhere, so I started with the NYT. On May 1, 2015 I contacted the NYT to ask why I could no longer see the comments. They replied that I should be able to see them. They also replied that I was the first person to bring the matter to their attention. Their reply caused me to know it was not related to the subscription, but to my system. So, I spent an afternoon reviewing the Safari “system preference” settings on my system, to search for anything that I thought might be the source of the problem. When I found none, I contacted the NYT again to ask for advice. Their reply suggested that I clear my cache of all cookies and try a different browser. I had already downloaded and installed Chrome, so I tried to search from that browser. I could not view the comments on Chrome either; so I downloaded and installed Firefox. Lo and behold, the comments showed up on Firefox.

I have not yet cleared my Safari cache. I was planning to switch to using Firefox as my default browser, but after Googling “Safari” I read an entry about Safari that caused me to conclude there are security features with Safari that are not included with Firefox. I have not purchased any 3rd party internet security software since switching from a PC to a MAC in 2012. Prior to the switch, I purchased Norton Internet Security software annually.

I delayed installing Yosemite after reading negative reviews, but I ultimately decided it didn’t make sense to not install a system upgrade. I immediately encountered problems. My system repeatedly locked up for no apparent reason. I frequently rebooted. The subsequent Yosemite update must have fixed that bug, because it doesn’t lock up on a regular, recurring basis.

So, back to the original purpose of my question, i.e., no longer being able to review comments on NYT articles. I would appreciate any incite about whether the source of the problem is the OS or the browser, and suggestions about what actions I might take to resolve the issue. Also, give me any words of wisdom you might have about whether I get more security from using Safari because it is exclusive to Apple products, or if I should purchase and install additional security software.

1. Empty Caches

Safari > Preference > Advanced

Checkmark the box for "Show Develop menu in menu bar".

Develop menu will appear in the Safari menu bar.

Click Develop and select "Empty Caches" from the dropdown.

2. Delete Cookies

Safari > Preferences > Privacy > Cookies and other website data:

Click the “Details” button.

Remove all cookies except ones from Apple, your internet service provider and banks.

3. Safari > Preferences > Extensions

Turn off Extensions if any and launch Safari again to test.

Turn on those one by one and test.

Click "Bookmarks" in the Safari menu bar and select "Edit Bookmarks".

When Bookmark page appears, enter New York Times in the search box at the bottom right corner and delete it when it is shows up.

Try NY Times now.

Reset Safari as we knew it is not available now in Safari 8.

In it's place there is "Clear History and Website Data" menu. Using that will remove most of the cached information.

Dominic, I appreciated your prompt reply to my issue. Please accept my apology for not giving you feedback sooner.

I still have not resolved the NYT issue. After receiving the reply below from the NYT, I immediately knew it was a generic reply, because I had previously given them the answers to items 1, 2, & 3. So, I opened my query in the support community. I subsequently continued to pull up NYT articles which are displayed & updated regularly on a NYT toolbar above my screen, from the Safari NYT extension, to look for comments. I began to notice that the comments were showing up on some, but not all, articles without my having done anything. That’s when I began to think the NYT communication tools might be the source of the problem, after all. For the same reason, I delayed emptying my cache, as suggested by both you and the NYT, hoping all the while, that comments would eventually show up on all.

NYTimes.com Customer Service May 4 (8 days ago)

Dear xxxxxx xxxxx,

We recommend not using a bookmark or shortcut to access NYTimes.com. This is because the bookmark is 'Time Stamped' for a specific time and date in the past. When you use the bookmark your browser searches for that specific time stamped information. Due to NYTimes.com being updated every 15 minutes, your browser struggles to locate the information and does not include all of the updated information, which appears as missing pieces or forces you to logout, etc.

Please make sure your browser is fully updated, as well as any plugins. If the problem persists, please try using a different Internet browser to see if the problem is isolated to a browser.

Clearing your Internet cache and browser cookies after removing any bookmarks, home pages, etc. associated with www.nytimes.com should correct the issues that you have reported. Please follow the instructions below for your specific browser.

For Mac:

1). For Safari: Click on the Safari menu button in the top-left corner of the browser window.

2). Click on ‘Reset Safari’.

3). Ensure that ‘Empty the Cache’ and ‘Remove All Cookies’ are selected.

4). Click ‘Reset’.

Please note that after you have completed these steps to resolve the issues that you have reported, you will then need to close out any browser windows you may have open currently, re-open your browser, navigate to our website by typing in www.nytimes.com to your browser’s URL bar at the top of your screen, and log in to our website to be able to enjoy your unlimited access.

If the steps above do not resolve the issue you are experiencing, please provide us with more information so that we may further assist in this matter.

1). What device are you experiencing this issue on?

2). What version operating system/browser are you using?

3). In detail, what is the issue you are experiencing?

4). Are you logging into www.nytimes.com or the NYTimes application?

5). Please provide any error messages and/or screenshots if possible.

I don’t know if the Safari NYT extension is the equivalent of a bookmark identified in paragraph 1 of their reply, or if it is considered a NYT “application", as identified in #4) of their questions. So, I logged in directly from the search window as they suggested; but it didn’t make a difference.

I have since cleared my cache, although I have not yet uninstalled the extensions, one by one, as you suggested, and which I plan to do.

I also have a nagging discomfort about Yosemite. I had hoped the 10.10.3 update would resolve instability issues, but I have continued to have problems with screens moving out of sight, to the right, and as recently as today, my computer locked up for no apparent reason.

FYI, I have never installed any additional security software. I have installed a java plug-in because it is required to play multiple player card games at pogo.com. Other than those 2 potentially troublesome details, I can’t recall anything “unique” about my system.

At one time, I felt confidant I was in control of my system, but I no longer believe that is true. I have experienced several indications that I do not, one of which is that a Chrome “launcher” icon, which I had NOT placed on the dock, showed up beside the Chrome icon, which I HAD placed there. I have since removed the “launcher” from the dock, but I am so irritated about it that I plan to uninstall Chrome as soon as I decide I will not use Chrome to help troubleshoot the source of the NYT issue.

I welcome any additional thoughts you might have about my problem after reviewing my additional details. In the interim, I will pursue yours and the NYT suggestions.

Thanks for the hint to search in “Bookmarks” I have lots of sites bookmarked; but it never occurred to me to search for NYT in my bookmarks, because I don’t recall ever bookmarking it! But it was there! I removed it. Could it have been bookmarked by the app? That’s another example of what I meant when I said I am no longer in charge of my own computer!

Yes, I also noticed the NYT instructions were outdated. My draft reply tells them that. To be perfectly honest with you, I don’t know how the IT techs keep abreast of all the changes across the various media venues, let alone the numerous updates by the major software companies. I liken the internet to the wild west in the 19th century!

As you instructed, I disabled the NYT extension; quit Safari and then relaunched Safari. I didn’t notice that it had any impact; but I wasn’t sure what I was testing for. Then I enabled NYT again. I didn’t do anything with the other extensions I have installed. I don’t mind doing it with the other extensions; but you need to tell me what I’m testing for, so I’ll know what to look for.

I am still wondering why no one else has ever raised the issue with the NYT. Perhaps others don’t enjoy the comments as much as I do. Unfortunately, I live in Alabama. If you saw the inane comments on AL.com, you would understand why I am so impressed with NYT comments!

In any case, I am ready to reply to their last response, which is the one I previously inserted in my reply to you. I’ll send them a screenshot of their homepage, so they can see which articles indicate comments are attached.
