how to do desk repair?

My macbook air has been slow lately and the Mail os not working well too. The HD storage shows almost 50 GB of 'Other' files which is what I do not know. I ran the disk verify and it says that my disk needs to be repair using Recovery HD and I should restart my mac by long pressing command+R key. However, my mac does not restart on log pressing comd+R and there is no other way I can repair the disk. The verify repair shows some problems with the disk.

thanks Niel. doing this starts the macbook in the safe mode but the disk is still not repaired as disk verify still says the disk is corrupted and needs to be repaired from recovery HD. It says i can restart my macbook by long pressing command + R button, which does not happen either. How do I repair my HD?
