My iPad email indicates 28 unread items. There are none.

MY iPad indicates that I have 28 unread emails. There are none. I have tried resetting: I closed all open apps then held the power and home buttons. No change. Then an email arrived. The count went to 29, then back to 28 after reading the item. There seems to be nothing in Settings which might clear this.

I have an iPad2 with iOs 8.3

iPad 2 Wi-Fi, iOS 7.1
